Less uncertainty, more hope

Por

Cristiane Quartaroli

CAUSE: The Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV) released its economic uncertainty indicator, the IIE-Br, yesterday, and the results were incredibly positive. It saw its largest drop of the year, driven primarily by a decline in the "Media component," which reflects a less volatile global landscape. This relief was supported by the truce in the trade war between the United States and China, as well as the markets' measured response to the escalating conflict in the Middle East. Domestically, the resilience of economic activity and signs of cooling inflation—even with the Selic rate remaining at a high level—helped solidify a more stable perception among market participants. As a result, the Expectations component reached its lowest level since January 2015, pointing to greater predictability for the coming months, albeit with a note of caution.

CONSEQUENCE: This reduction in uncertainty may have been one of the factors impacting the financial market, especially our exchange rate. Greater economic predictability and the interpretation that the Central Bank will maintain its contractionary monetary policy reinforce the attractiveness of Brazilian assets, favoring the inflow of foreign capital and, consequently, the appreciation of the real against the dollar. Furthermore, the truce in the external environment reduces the demand for assets considered safer, such as the U.S. currency. This combined movement contributes to a more favorable exchange rate, which in turn helps curb future inflationary pressures and improves the environment for investment and consumption decisions in the country. But let's not get ahead of ourselves; we know it's not all sunshine and rainbows, and there are many other variables that can influence exchange rate behavior. The IIE-Br is just one of them, and it's great that it brought some good news!
